Building Black Power
9 Black churches and others throughout Minnesota are on a path to build something new and never done before in our state at this scale: a collective project to build Black independent political power. We launched the Black Church Power project in October 2025 to chart a multi-year effort to win top priorities that have come up after months of surveying our congregations and surrounding neighborhoods.
Together, we’ve built an agenda of three shared priorities:
Quality and affordable housing,
Public, affordable and culturally relevant youth programming, and
Funding for affordable healthcare, as well as mental health and substance dependency wellness.
Meeting The Moment
The rise and recent ascension of authoritarianism in our government is alarming. Instead of honoring the not-yet-fulfilled promise of a multiracial democracy where the freedoms and voices of all people are protected, some of our leaders are consolidating power for themselves and dismantling people’s freedoms and well-being in the process.
This has especially been felt in the Black community and Black churches across Minnesota who are joining forces with ISAIAH to take responsibility for what’s next by leaning into the courage of the Black church traditions of history and boldly casting a vision and a plan for our future.
